10 TIPS FOR NEW SURFERS COMING TO SANTA TERESA

Choose a surf instruction with local surf school. Never surf alone. It’s always safer to have a buddy. Before entering study the water’s conditions, the coastal features(rocks, holes, signs, flags etc.) and most importantly their currents to match your ability. Keep in mind that 90% of all surf accidents happen within the white water or shore break. During the paddle out and coming in. Hold your board as you enter and don’t ride onto the beach. Always use correct equipment for your ability and use a safety leash and wax every session. Respect all surfers and local surf advice(wisdom)-they have been here longer than you and know better. Always be aware of surfers in all directions who could be on a wave already. Never turn your back on the ocean, things happen fast out there. If you see a surfer coming at you down the line adjust your line to avoid quickly. Never ditch your board, hold on and do a turtle roll. To avoid surfers don’t always try to out run them, sometimes you need to paddle into the impact zone to avoid collision. If you are not ready to manage the impact zone maybe it is best to change to a mellower location, with more instruction, and extra classes from local instructors. Surfing is an amazing experience and a connection with nature but you have to be safe, strong and peaceful to keep the vibe high while you practice and learn the ways of the ocean. Pura vida, enjoy your Costa Rican surf experience!

ONE YEAR

One year ago we started showing you our statistics and these are the results: Preventions-1624 Rescues-192 First Aids-108 CPR-3 This year we hosted 69 talented lifeguards from 6 different countries. Together as team we have experienced challenges and growth, rainy and sunny days and will continue to dedicate our work to provide safety to the people that enjoy the beautiful beaches of Santa Teresa. MATIAS ETCHENIQUE is our team captain, here is what he had to say after acknowledging the numbers of this year with continuous crew changes and difficult ocean conditions. ‘’Being STLG Leader, or oldest player, is both very challenging and motivating at the same time. The constant changing of the team members, brings fresh energy and new motivations, but it also brings the challenge of getting them ready for the game that this ocean plays, a dangerous game with big waves, strong currents and limited resources. Strong water women and men from all over the world, bring their own experience and wisdom to the team, which pushes our program and participants to keep improving and evolving. But at the end we always go back to the beginning and to our mission - protect the beaches of Santa Teresa and to look after people’s safety.’’ As the Santa Teresa Lifeguard team we would like to thank our donors and community for the support as well as all of our volunteer lifeguards throughout this year. We truly appreciate the hard work everyone has been doing. If you would like to join our team as a lifeguard or collaborate in some other way, remember it is never too late to reach out and take a part in the STLG efforts.
